Tony - have you tried Pair Programming? Pairing is a good way to introduce new team members to the code and the flow of the team. If you can get new team members working with the code immediately in a supported environment like pairing, there will be a minimal period of decreased productivity. The experienced team member can guide the newbie and the whole team will benefit from the spread of knowledge.
