Coordinating on a standard time in the morning can be difficult depending on commutes and preferred starting times. Is it ok to have the standup at the end of the day or even in the middle of the day?

It doesn't really matter when the meeting happens - the team should agree on a time that works best for everyone to attend. If the meeting is needed to determine the work for the day then there may be a problem. Your team should not depend on the standup to know what to work on next ... there should be sufficient planning within the release and iteration/sprint to know what needs to be done.
All of that said, I have never seen a team that doesn't do their standup in the morning. :)
