Both. I love index cards for quickly capturing ideas or tasks - I always carry them with me. They also easy to use for a backlog - you can re-prioritize them quickly (lay them out on a table and re-order them).

Stickies seem to work best on a physical taskboard. As they have all the attributes of an index card but they are smaller and sticky so you can move them around the taskboard.

In summary, index cards for ideas/stories - stickies for tasks on the taskboard.

I don't trust stickies. They fall off, crumble up, and end up dirty.

Index cards are more preservable, and stuck to board with push pin is more reliable.

I like stickies. They are easy to move around, quick - and easy. If you have a problem with them, you probably need a new surface. Drywall tends to work very well. Also make sure to by the super sticky sticky notes. They are far better than cheap ones and don't fall off. Also make sure that between each sprint you clean the wall as dirt will cause them not to stick as well.

Cards are nice too, and you can put stickies on the card to represent tasks or impediments. Tacks tend to cause a cork board to wear out or you end up putting a lot of holes in the wall.
