New Scrum team survey

When a Scrum Master is starting to work with an existing Scrum team on an existing project, what should she do on her first day? Let's assume it's a mid-sprint day.

Here is what comes to my mind:

  • Attend the daily standup and other Scrum ceremonies.
  • Find out Who is who. Survey the team and the roles. Identify the Product Owner, and team members.
  • Meet one-on-one with the Product Owner and team members.
  • Identify the maturity of the team, and what practices they follow.
  • What else?

Everything you wrote, and

  • Find out who is the sponsor and find out about his interests and goals
  • Understand the product backlog
  • Understand the story board
  • Identify all the stakeholders, like managers, executive staff, customers, end users etc.
  • See environment of the team, like team room, meeting room, coffee kitchen etc.
  • Read and understand the vision of the product
  • Catch a glimpse of the technology stack and the architecture

I think bearing in mind it is a first day, there is only so much you could take in and I'd personally believe that taking in some useful information would be better than trying to meet the entire team and learn the processes in one day, that seems a little optimistic to me though would be fantastic!

If we had a new scrum master today, I'd probably hope they'd spend the day looking at our process and getting a feel for what we do.
