Remote pair-programming, good or bad?

Due to weather or the many unavoidable interruptions of life, times occur when a developer is working from home. In this situation, is it better to pair remotely or to single-track?

Or, in other words, is the benefit of sharing a screen with another developer offset by the lack of easy verbal and nonverbal communication?

I would say that remote pair programming is not an ideal situation. Part of pair programming is the ability to communicate face-to-face. Often doing pair programming remotely can cause situations where "something is lost in translation" and being near other co-workers and not necessarily your pair is a nice thing to have to bounce ideas off one another.

Ultimately doing any type of work remotely will cause some type of communication breakdown.
